Sea Kayaking Guides

Michael McCoy has lived in Hawaii on Maui since 1985. An avid scuba diver, he had visited many south pacific islands including Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Tonga, Western Samoa. His passion for kayaking began as a result of his years racing Hawaiian Outrigger Canoes. In 1990, he and his future wife, Melissa, bought a couple single kayaks to tour the waters off Maui. In 1991, they took a collapsable double kayak with them to New Zealand on their honeymoon. In late 1991, Michael quit his job as a stock broker and he and Melissa opened a kayak shop, South Pacific Kayaks, offering day tours with snorkeling, rentals and retail sales. They also took groups paddling for multi-day trips along the North Coast of Molokai and the East Coast of Maui (Hana). They next year they took the same kayak to the Fiji Islands to the island of Kadavu. A seed was planted... In November of 1996, the first Kayak Kadavu Expedition was realized, just after they had sold their kayak business on Maui. Michael is an avid naturalist (specializing in botany) and a professional photographer. He is a gourmet cook much to the delight of the paddlers on our trips. He enjoys sharing the wonders of Fiji's natural abundance with the people that join him on these expeditions.

Melissa McCoy has lived in Hawaii on Maui and Kauai since 1974. A victim of circumstance, falling madly in love with an avid scuba diver, she reluctantly learned to dive so she could travel with Michael. Her goal was the colorful reefs of Fiji - she had seen pictures. From 1991-1996 she and Michael went to Fiji on several occasions to scuba dive and kayak. In 1993, Melissa opened a travel agency and by 1996, had built an internet travel business call "Fiji Reservations & Travel". She now joins Michael as co-guide (really hostess with the mostess) on several trips a year. Melissa enjoys writing, traveling, bird watching, scuba diving and eating Michael's gourmet cooking! Her passion is for the people on the expeditions. The guests and the villagers. The people who join Kayak Kadavu on this magnificent journey are her source of inspiration to write.

Tom-An incredible person, Tom's expertise and knowledge of the area is invaluable on the expeditions. He is the captian of the escort boat and usually the one that catches the fresh fish! He is married with a small baby. Michael is teaching him how to cook! (very un-tradiontional!)

Tuili-Of chiefly lineage, Tuili performs our sevu sevu's when we reach each village. He is our link to each village and chief. He also helps the paddlers and works on the escort boat.

Turi-Also of chiefly lineage, Turi loves to kayak. He is an awesome Soccer player. He assists in all areas, especially the heavy lifting!
